Exim Bank's new Management: Ambassodor Mwapachu appointed Chairman, Director; Irene Madeje Mlola

EXIM Bank Tanzania has appointed Ambassador Juma Volter Mwapachu as its new Chairman of the Board of Directors with immediate effect, taking over from Mr. Said Mwema who successfully completed his tenure in accordance with the lender’s internal governance policy.

Currently serving as a Director, Board of Directors, Heritage Insurance Tanzania Limited since 1998, a Member of Board of Directors of Alliance Life Assurance Tanzania Limited since 2014 among others, a distinguished former ambassador, Juma  Volter Mwapachu carries a wealth of experience through his long career in Government, in parastatals, private sector, civil society in Tanzania, regionally and internationally.

In a statement today, the bank’s Board of Directors thanked Ambassador Mwapachu for his exemplary leadership and contribution as a Director in the Board of Directors since 2011 saying as a Director, he ensured that the Bank continued to move forward both strategically and operationally.

“His extensive experience, knowledge and proven leadership will further provide the bank with continued momentum to chart innovations, pursue future growth, and further strengthen our position as among the largest financial institution in the country,”The bank’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr. Jaffari Matundu, commented upon the Boards announcement.

Ambassador Mwapachu holds a Bachelor of Laws from University of East Africa (1969) a Post-Graduate Diploma in International Law from the Indian Academy of International Law (1978), a Doctorate in Literature (Honoris Causa-2005) from the University of Dar-es-Salaam and a Doctorate in Political Sciences (honoris Causa-2012) from the National University of Rwanda.

His career pinnacle was being Tanzania’s Ambassador to France (2002-April 2006), Secretary General of East African Community (April 2006-April 2011) and Chair of Committee of Chief Executives in the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite (2008-2011). Ambassador Mwapachu was the Global President of the renowned Society for International Development (SID) from 2012-2016.

Ambassador Mwapachu, over the years, has spearheaded the launch of various institutions like the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (TCCA), the Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI) and the East African Business Council.

Further, the Board of the Bank also announced the appointment of Ms. Irene Madeje-Mlola as a new member of its Board of Directors.

Ms.Irene Madeje-Mlola holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Netherland’s Maastricht School of Management and ESAMI and a BCom from Dalhousie University in Canada. 

She is a Certified Company Director with the Commonwealth Association for Corporate Governance and holds a Strategic Leadership in Inclusive Finance Certificate from Harvard School of Business. 

Her areas of expertise include business transformation, financial inclusion, project management and general leadership. She is currently the Director of Operations at the Financial Sector Deepening Tanzania overseeing the technical and operations division.
