Emirates Tanzania SkyCargo Manager, Benny Ngozi. (DIRAMAKINI).

When did you join Emirates, what is your role and past experience?

I have been working with Emirates for 21 years. As a Cargo Manager, I am responsible for the cargo business in Tanzania, which includes the sales and operations.

I also look at developing innovative strategies to enhance the service and operations of Emirates SkyCargo in the country, making us a reliable and flexible company. I work closely with my team, to ensure they are always motivated and they get the support they require.

Kindly provide an overview of SkyCargo operations

Emirates SkyCargo is the freight division of Emirates. The air cargo carrier operates a combination of scheduled and chartered flights to more than 100 global destinations every week.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Emirates SkyCargo has been acting as a global conveyor belt connecting markets across the world supplying essential commodities including PPE, pharmaceuticals, food and other perishables, e-commerce goods as well as machinery and other equipment.

In Tanzania, Emirates SkyCargo connects exporters and importers with their global customers by offering cargo capacity on two weekly flights to Dar es Salaam. The cargo carrier continued to support the market during the COVID-19 pandemic by using passenger aircraft for cargo only flights.

How has Emirates SkyCargo adapted to the global pandemic?

Between April and June 2020, Emirates SkyCargo facilitated the movement of essential commodities and other supplies for individual consumers and businesses across the world by operating more than 10,000 cargo flights to destinations across six continents.

During the months of May and June, Emirates SkyCargo operated on an average more than 3,800 flights per month, with the aircraft traveling to over 100 destinations and covering approximately 37 million kilometers, which is the equivalent distance of roughly 50 trips to the moon and back.

We also introduced additional cargo capacity by using Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with seats removed from the Economy Class cabin, allowing for up to 17 tonnes or 132 cubic meters of additional cargo capacity per flight on top of the 40-50 tonne cargo capacity in the belly hold of the wide body passenger aircraft.

This was introduced in response to the strong air cargo market demand for rapid, reliable and efficient transportation of essential commodities such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, food, machinery and other supplies around the world.

What are the key exports and imports for the Tanzania market?

Emirates SkyCargo imports industrial goods and pharmaceuticals from the Far East, India and the UAE to Tanzania, exports include fresh meat, live crabs and lobsters and fish maw which is distributed in the Far East and Middle East, while fresh flowers, vegetables and fruits and fish is transported to Europe.

What measures has the airline taken to ensure the safety of its employees during this period?

Emirates SkyCargo places a strong emphasis on the safety of operations. Working with its partners, including ground handlers, the carrier has introduced a number of strict guidelines on cabin loading of cargo covering the type of permitted cargo as well as proper packaging and handling in accordance with IATA guidelines.

Emirates has multi-faceted measures for employees at every step of the travel journey, redefining safety and hygiene standards on board and on the ground.

We have implemented a comprehensive set of measures at every step which enhances the sanitization of all touch points, and ensure the health and safety of our customers and employees.

What are some innovative products offered by Emirates SkyCargo?

Emirates SkyCargo has designed a specialised three-tiered portfolio of solutions - Emirates Fresh, Emirates Fresh Active and Emirates Fresh Breathe - for air-freighting different kinds of perishable cargo including food items and flowers, which also supports Tanzanian exporters. Emirates Fresh Breathe provides ventilated cool chain solutions for fresh cut flowers.

We also monitor more than 1.5 million shipments through its integrated Cargo iQ, a system of shipment planning and performance monitoring for air cargo based on common business processes and milestones. Though this system, the airline provides its customers live shipment planning and cargo tracking allowing for more visibility on the status of their shipments.
