GABORONE-Batswana have been urged to venture into farming to help improve the country's food production. The call was made by Acting President Slumber Tsogwane when addressing a kgotla meeting in Orapa yesterday.
Acting President Tsogwane said government has taken a decision to restrict importation of some vegetable commodities in order to empower Batswana. He said this will help in achieving prosperity for all which is anchored on sustainable development.
He further said the production must be sufficient to meet the local demands hence its important for farmers to increase their output. The Acting President said the new changes in land use will give owners’ rights over such land. The changes will accord individual landowners the ability to use their lands for entrepreneurial purposes.
On other issues Acting President Tsogwane commended the frontline workers for their commitment in the fight against Covid-19. He praised Botswana scientists who discovered the Omicron virus for their great job. He said COVID-19 has placed a great burden in the country’s economy with people losing jobs, their loved ones and companies losing businesses.
He however said Botswana’s Economic Recovery and Transformation Plan is designed to support government’s reforms and strengthen the private sector. He also encouraged those that are not vaccinated to do so.
For her part Kgosi Garetsamae Tsholofelo Seisa decried shortage of staff accommodation for public officers. She also said there is only one nursery school in Orapa which is not able to enroll all the children and some are forced to commute to Letlhakane.
