TMA: Update on development of the Tropical Storm Hidaya

DAR-The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has issued a weather alert detailing a moderate storm that is set to hit the Indian Ocean east of the Mtwara coast.

According to 2nd May 2024 night update issued by TMA said, the Moderate Tropical Storm Hidaya will be accompanied by strong winds that could affect the weather patterns, causing periods of heavy rains and strong winds in some areas of Mtwara,
Lindi, Pwani regions (including the islands of Mafia), Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Morogoro, the islands of Unguja and Pemba, and the surrounding areas.

"The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) is continuing to issue update on the development of the Tropical Storm Hidaya currently over the Indian Ocean, east of the Mtwara coast.

"The Tropical Storm Hidaya has continued to strengthen (deepening) into a Severe Tropical Storm moving west-ward close to our coast, and currently at approximately 402 kilometers east of the Mtwara coast, with a maximum wind speed of 110km/hr and is expected to strengthen further in the next 24 hours.

"The analysis of weather systems over the ocean shows a high probability of Severe Tropical Storm Hidaya moving very close to the coast of Tanzania and persisting until May 6, 2024. However, the Storm is expected to weaken (fill up) after May 6, 2024.

"The presence of Tropical Storm Hidaya near the coast of our country is expected to dominate and affect the weather patterns, causing periods of heavy rains and strong winds in some areas of Mtwara, Lindi,

"Pwani regions (including the islands of Mafia), Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Morogoro, the islands of Unguja and Pemba, and the surrounding areas. Period of light rains and some moderate winds are already being observed in some parts of Mtwara.
"Period and incidences of heavy rains and strong winds, and large waves are expected to increase, spreading to other coastal areas between 4th and 6th of May 2024."

ADVICE:

"The public, particularly in the named areas and those involved in marine activities over the Indian Ocean are advised to take maximum precautions, and continue to make follow-ups of latest weather forecasts and updates from Tanzania Meteorological Authority as well as to seek advice and guidance from experts in the relevant sectors to minimize potential impacts.

"The Tanzania Meteorological Authority continues to monitor the development of Severe Tropical Storm Hidaya and its associated impacts and will provide forecast updates after every three hours, and whenever necessary and as appropriate."
