TMA urges precaution as Cyclone IALY intensifies in Indian Ocean north of Madagascar

DAR, (19th May 2024 at 6:00 pm)-Following the earlier information issued on 17th May, 2024 by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) on the presence of Moderate Tropical Storm "IALY" in the northern Indian Ocean north of Madagascar Island, the Authority would like to provide an update on the progress and movement of the storm.
The analysis of weather systems show that the Moderate Tropical Storm has strengthened to Severe Tropical Storm and has continued to remain in the Indian Ocean as previously forecasted. 

However, until at 9:00 am this morning, the storm was about 680 kilometers East of the coast of our country.

Following its position and the distance from our country, periods of strong winds exceeding 40 kilometers per hour and waves exceeding 2 meters may occur in the Indian Ocean, especially between today the 19th of May 2024 and Tuesday 21st of May 2024. 

Meanwhile, rain periods are likely to be observed over the coastal areas particularly between the 21st and 22nd of May 2024.

ADVICE: The Public and Mariners in general are advised to take appropriate precautions and continue to monitor and consider forecast information issued by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority as well as receive advice and guidance from experts in the relevant sectors.

The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) continues to monitor the progress of the Storm and its effects on the weather systems in the country and will continue to provide information whenever necessary and as appropriate.
