JUBA (𝟐𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒)-President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday met with a delegation of Catholic Bishops as part of the efforts to advance national peace, reconciliation and regional stability.
The meeting follows the successful celebration of the Eucharistic Congress and the Golden Jubilee of the Catholic Church for South Sudan and Sudan.
The group of clerics led by His Eminence Cardinal Dr. Stephen Ameyu appealed to the government to prioritize peace, reconciliation and unity in the nation in a bid to foster a harmonious society, urging the government to take decisive action in ensuring that all citizens live in peace and a secure atmosphere.
“We have known that the President is a man of peace and he has briefed us about the Tumaini peace initiative, and told us that the government team is now set to travel to Nairobi to negotiate in order to bring lasting peace to the country,” Cardinal Stephen asserted.
President Kiir acknowledged the Bishops' call and reassured them of his commitment to maintaining peace across South Sudan, citing his administration's resolve at addressing the challenges facing the country.
The Head of State and the Clergies also touched on the escalating crisis in neighbouring Sudan, where the conflict between the two warring generals has caused widespread devastation.
Both President Kiir and the Catholic Bishops urged the warring factions in Sudan to end the conflict and work toward durable peace.
The meeting underlines the need for the Church and government to collaborate in securing a non-violent and cohesive future for the South Sudanese people.
