Ms. Joyce Mwakalobo Mkinga! Today, I do not mourn, but to celebrate the life of an extraordinary communication enthusiat, whose presence has left an indelible mark on the lives of many, to be precise me.
She was more than just a colleague, a leader, a mentor; she was a beacon of wisdom, grace, and unwavering faith to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
I know Joyce, allow me to affectionately call her “Mama Habari”, was a staunch and devoted Christian, her life a testimony to her faith.
A proud graduate of Makerere University, who embodied the virtues of discipline, humility, and excellence.
Her passion for writing was reflected in her thoughtful articles, through which she shared her wisdom and perspective with the world.
Her journey was one of purpose and inspiration, and her presence was a gift to those fortunate enough to work alongside her, learn from her, and share in her warmth and wisdom.
Mama Habari’s academic brilliance was evident early on, as a graduate of Makerere University, one of the most prestigious institutions in the region.
Her intellect and thirst for knowledge were matched only by her love for writing, as she was a gifted scribe whose words could inspire, inform, and connect people across diverse walks of life.
During my early days, as a young and enthusiastic communications expert entering government service, I found myself under the tutelage of Mama Habari.
As well all know, transitioning from the vibrant private sector to the structured pace of public service was challenging, and like many, I found myself grappling with frustration and uncertainty.
In her calm, composed, and reserved manner, she guided me through the challenging transition from the dynamic private sector to the structured world of government service. Her advice to me during one of those difficult days remains etched in my heart:
“Mdogo wangu, hapa ni sehemu sahihi kwako kuna kazi zinahitaji mtu mwenye kaliba yako, tulia ni suala la muda tu.”
Her words were a gentle yet firm reminder to persevere, to trust in the process, and to believe in one’s purpose.
Mama Habari’s belief in me and her ability to see potential where others might overlook was extraordinary.
A few months after that conversation, she entrusted me with a significant responsibility—leading the team tasked with drafting the first Communication Strategy for the Five-Year Development Plan (FYDP II: 2015/16-2020/21).
She believed in my abilities and gave me the confidence to rise to the challenge.
That moment marked the beginning of a journey that shaped my career and reinforced the invaluable lessons she taught me-dedication, resilience, and the power of mentorship.
I was once little stream of a river has become a main river sloshing the entire year and in all season grace á Mama Habari.
Beyond the workplace, Mama Habari had a heart that embraced everyone. She cared deeply for her colleagues, taking on their challenges as her own and offering support whenever she could.
I personally experienced her kindness when she generously allowed me the use of her official vehicle for nearly a year, easing burdens at a time when I needed it most. She always found ways to support those around her, reminding us of the true essence of leadership-service to others.
Though she has departed from this earthly realm, her legacy lives on in the lives she touched, the lessons she imparted, and the love she shared so freely.
Let us honor Joyce by emulating her virtues-by leading with compassion, standing firm in our faith, and always believing in the potential of others.
Mama Habari, you will forever remain in our hearts. Your light continues to shine brightly in our memories, and your influence will ripple through the generations to come. Rest in eternal peace, dearest Mama Habari. You have fought the good fight; you have finished the race.
