Experts join forces on awareness of climate change adoptation and mitigation initiatives

ARUSHA-Senior Climate Change experts held an Outreach Event on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Processes for Eastern Africa in Arusha to discuss their contribution on Climate Change adaptation and mitigation initiatives in the region.
The event’s objectives included: Raising awareness about IPCC; Sharing information about the products of the IPCC Seventh Assessment Cycle and opportunities for participating in the IPCC process, including authorship and peer review of the IPCC Reports. The event provided a platform for sharing lessons learned and best practices in climate change science; and Inspiring and encouraging Scientists, Experts, Practitioners, Lectures and Students to follow and participate in IPCC process and activities, particularly the Seventh Assessment Report (AR7).
The event was coordinated by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) and the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), joined by many other scientists from all over East Africa countries through an online session.

The guest of honor for the event was, Hon. Prof. Judge Mshibe Ali Bakari, the Chairperson of TMA’s Board who insisted on the participation of Climate Change scientists in the IPCC process.

“It is my hope that through such outreach events and other awareness events more scientists and experts from East Africa will actively participate in the preparation of IPCC Seventh Assessment Report (IPCC AR7). Reflecting on observed increase in frequency and intensity of extreme events, Judge Mshibe said “as for us TMA, we will always be at the forefront to deliver world class Early Warning Services for Early Action for various climate sensitive sectors and the general public”.
On the other hand, the Acting Director General of the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) and The Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a explained how IPCC reports play an important role in shaping the future of climate action, by providing best available science, actionable information that inform adaptation and mitigation initiatives.
“IPCC AR7 is expected to be comprehensive and robust in shaping the future of climate action, therefore I look forward to share more insight during the course of this event to see how we can enhance our participation in the IPCC Processes and especially in the IPCC Seventh Assessment Reports Cycle (IPCC AR7),”He added.
